This paper reports the results of 242 cases of breast mass biopsies at the department of general surgery, Soon Chun Hyang College of Medicine from January, 1978 to-December, 1982.
1) Of 242 cases, 232 patients (95.9%) were female and 10 patients (4. 1%) were male.
2) Age ranged from 13 years to 65 years and mean age was 32.4 years.
The peak incidence of the breast lesions in female was 4th decade (40.5%), followed by 3 rd
Decade (33.2%) and 5th decade (12.1%).
3) The most common pathology in female breast was mammary dysplasia (40. 1%), followed by fibroadenoma (31.0%) and breast cancer (11.2%).
Mammary dysplasia was most frequently observed in the 4th decade (52.7%), fibroadenoma in the 3rd decade (45.8%) and breast cancer in the 4th and 5th decades (42.3 % and 38.5%).
Mean. age of mammary dysplasia was 32. 1 years, fibroadenoma 26. 9 years and breast cancer 42.7 years.
4) The breast mass was most frequently observed in the upper outer quadrant in the three main lesions respectively; 45.6% in mammary dysplasia, 45.8% in fibroadenoma and 50.0% in breast cancer.
5) Palpable mass was the main reason that brought patients to this hospital (97. 4%).
6) Of the three main lesions, 122 cases came to this hospital after onset of symptom within one year (84. 1%).
7) Of the breast cancer, scirrhous carcinoma was most frequently observed (84.6%).
8) All 232 cases of female breast lesions were diagnosed clinically but biopsy proved 142 cases as correct (61.2%).
On histologic examination, 6 out of 25 clinically suspected malignancy were noted as benign (24.0%) and 7 out of 207 clinically suspected benignancy were turned out to be malignant (3.4%).
